Farris lawyers have wide-ranging experience in the area of Administrative and Regulatory law.

Farris litigators have argued cases before a wide variety of administrative tribunals including the British Columbia Securities Commission, the British Columbia Utilities Commission, the Labour Relations Board, the Workers Compensation Board, the Property Assessment Appeal Board, the Information and Privacy Commissioner, and the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal.

They have also been involved in a broad range of judicial review proceedings, challenging or defending the decisions of administrative agencies. In addition, Farris lawyers have advised and represented administrative and professional regulatory agencies, including the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission and the Institute of Chartered Accountants. 

For several years Farris litigator Robert Anderson, Q.C., has taught administrative law courses as an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Law. Farris litigators Ludmila Herbst and Alison Narod have also served on the Executive of the Canadian Bar Association’s Administrative Law Subsection – Vancouver. 

Farris partner Alison Narod is an administrative decision-maker, hearing cases as Disciplinary Panel Chair of Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada and as a tribunal member in the Community Care and Assisted Living Appeal Board and for a period on the list of arbitrators under BC Labour Relations Code. Ms. Narod is, as well, a former adjudicator on the Employment Standards Tribunal and a former Disciplinary Panel Chair for the Vancouver Stock Exchange, the Canadian Venture Exchange, and the TSX Venture Exchange.

  • Representing a developer in defending municipal process in Eaton v. Vancouver (City), 2008 BCSC 1080.
  • Representing a golf course on an appeal from a Human Rights Tribunal decision in Marine Drive Golf Club v. Buntain, 2007 BCCA 17, 2005 BCSC 1434.
  • Representing a dentist on an application before the Information and Privacy Commissioner in Re An Incorporated Dentist’s Practice, 2006 CanLII 13537 (BC I.P.C.).
  • Smith v. Knights of Columbus, 2005 BCHRT 544.
  • Representing the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission in Adler International Investments Ltd. v. Central Okanagan (Regional District), 2001 BCCA 416.
  • Representing the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission in Brentwood Pioneer Holdings Ltd. v. British Columbia (Agricultural Land Commission) (2000), 186 D.L.R. (4th) 385, 2000 BCCA 320.
  • Representing West Coast Energy and the Island Cogeneration Limited Partnership in the successful defence of an appeal brought before the Environmental Appeal Board of British Columbia to set aside and/or vary the permit issued by the Regional Waste Manager that authorized the discharge of air contaminants from a cogeneration power facility located in Campbell River.
