Thomas Kent Speaks on Behalf of Revelstoke Chamber in Growing Commercial Tax Revolt

Litigation Counsel, Thomas Kent, represented the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce’s Governance Committee in a recent meeting with Revelstoke Council. He spoke on behalf of a growing number of small private businesses who perceive that the City’s commercial tax rates are a real threat to the survival of independent businesses in Revelstoke.

The Chamber of Commerce concerned by tax hikes established the Governance Committee to help it come up with alternatives to the Council’s current spending.

“This town has so much going for it and if we’re not careful we’re going to blow it,” he said during his thirty minute presentation to the Council and pointed to the fact that in 2009 business taxes here were 6.65 times as high as property taxes. The provincial average is just 2.94 times.
