Farris Receives Corporate Social Responsibility Award

Today the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) held its inaugural HELM Awards (Honouring Excellence in Legal Marketing) and presented Farris with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) award. Farris’ philosophy is to support the local community and charities that have a connection to our firm, employees, and clients. In addition to financial contributions, Farris lawyers and employees often participate in such events providing both leadership and physical support. Below is a summary outlining some of our contributions back to the community. A $1 million donation to The University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Law. This is the largest gift ever made by a law firm to support legal education in B.C. and it will support the Faculty of Law’s efforts to replace the current law building with a new structure on the existing UBC Law School site. For more information, please click here. Other activities involving UBC include the Farris Forum; an ongoing Endowment Fund; and Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP scholarships. Farris Partners Rob Anderson and Ludmila Herbst teach Administrative Law (Law 210) and Commercial Transactions (Law 437) respectively at UBC, and Farris Partners have regularly been involved in the UBC Trial Advocacy course. The Farris Trial Experience Program via ProBono Law BC, the Salvation Army, and the Court of Appeal Pro Bono Program, whereby the firm provides legal services on a pro bono basis. Over the past 3 years, Farris and its employees have contributed over $465,000 to the United Way of the Lower Mainland and its member agencies, and in 2006 was the highest contributing law firm in Vancouver. Our support of the BC Technology Social Venture Partners has seen their Kidsafe Project Society go from 240 inner city children to 400; the Social Purchasing Portal (SPP) create 67 jobs for hard-to-employ people living in the downtown eastside; and Quest Food Exchange increase from $4.4 million in food distribution to $7.1 million with Farris’ support. Farris’ blood donor program has resulted in the firm being recognized for either the “most total donations” or “most donations by percentage of employees” as part of the Canadian Blood Services/Annual Vancouver Legal Community program. 2007 will be our 10th year of participation. Silver level supporter of the St. Paul’s Hospital Lights of Hope annual fundraiser for the past seven years. Since its inception in 1998, the campaign has raised more than $8 million for equipment, research, and patient care at St. Paul’s Hospital. Our firm has supported numerous organizations and events, including: BC Cancer Foundation; Prostate Centre at Vancouver General Hospital; British Columbia Paraplegic Association; The Weekend to End Breast Cancer; Central City Foundation Downtown Eastside; and Cypress Mountain Relay for Life team. In the past, we have sold old PCs to lawyers and staff, and donated the proceeds to Canuck Place, Canadian Cancer Society, BC Cancer Foundation, BC Lung Association, and Ride for Life. Farris also supports its employees in The Vancouver Sun Run; Climb the Wall for Clean Air; Science Fair Foundation Fun Run; Run for the Cure; and its dragon boat team. Everyone at Farris is proud to support these worthwhile causes, and of the recognition received today from the LMA. The July 3rd edition of Business in Vancouver will feature the award recipients.
