Farris had a strong presence at a full-day Continuing Legal Education Society of BC conference on the new Limitation Act, which comes into force on June 1, 2013 and will significantly change the time frames in which many claims may be pursued in BC. The conference, held on May 6, 2013, included presentations from a cross-section of prominent BC practitioners, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and the Law Society of BC, and the author of the Law of Limitations.

Apr 02, 2013 -LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services (LifeLabs) today announced it has completed the purchase of BC Biomedical Laboratories Ltd. (BC Biomedical) following approvals from the Federal Competition Bureau and the Provincial government. The two companies are coming together to better serve patients and their health providers across the province.

March 1, 2013 - A Farris team, led by Partner Brian R. Canfield, represented American Hotel Income Properties REIT LP (AHIP) in its initial public offering (IPO) of 9,570,000 limited partnership units on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The IPO completed on February 20, 2013, and the exercise of the over-allotment option by the underwriters closed on March 1, 2013, raising total gross proceeds of C$100.1 million.

On November 2, 2012, the BC Court of Appeal unanimously dismissed the appeal of a decision denying leave for a class action to be commenced against Macdonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. based on the secondary market civil liability provisions of the BC Securities Act. The successful Farris team was led by Robert Anderson, Q.C. and included Teresa Tomchak and Nicholas Hooge. The case is the first of its kind in British Columbia to consider the statutory cause of action relating to secondary market disclosure in the Securities Act and was the first in Canada to deny leave. The BC Court of Appeal’s decision is precedent-setting as it is the first Canadian appellate court decision to consider whether leave should be granted to commence a cause of action relating to disclosure in the secondary market.
