Mitchell joined Farris in July 1998 after spending the majority of the previous 28 years with the Vancouver office of McCarthy Tétrault.  He served as their Managing Partner from 1988 to 1990.  Prior to joining that firm, he spent three years as a professor in the Faculty of Law at Western University in London, Ontario.

Mitchell has an active practice, often giving advice to boards of directors and independent committees of boards of directors; corporations and directors in “going private” transactions; and mergers and acquisitions of public and private corporations. In his real estate practice, Mitchell has been involved in various transactions, financings and complex debt restructurings.

He is rated by LEXPERT as one of Vancouver’s leading lawyers in mergers & acquisitions, corporate finance, mid-market advisory services, income funds and corporate commercial (one of only three lawyers so recognized), one of Canada’s 40 “Deal-Makers”, one of Canada’s 100 most creative lawyers, and one of Canada’s 100 leading “cross-border” transaction lawyers. 

Mitchell has developed an expertise in “income trusts” and has advised in approximately 15% of the business income trusts in Canada.

Mitchell is involved in various professional organizations.  He is an organizing member of the Canadian Council for Public Private Partnerships and a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of British Columbia.  He was a director of Norske Skog Canada Ltd. and member of the Audit Committee and Human Resources and Corporate Governance Committee.  He is corporate secretary for Concord Pacific Group Inc., and Maximizer Software Inc. and a former director of Concert Properties Ltd.

Mitchell is also involved in the community.  He is a director of the Arts Club Theatre and was the chair (2002-2003) of the combined Jewish Appeal of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver and is currently the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Jewish Foundation of Greater Vancouver.  He is a former chair of the Real Estate division of the United Way of Greater Vancouver and the Lawyer division of the United Way of Greater Vancouver.  He is a member and former chair of the Board of Trade Task Force on the Provincial Budget.  He is presently a member of the Securities Law Advisory Committee of the British Columbia Securities Commission.
