Mike is a partner in the litigation and media law groups.  Mike’s business litigation practice involves all aspects of corporate/commercial litigation, including trials, motions and appeals in all levels of the Courts of British Columbia.  Mike acts for clients in the construction, strata and real property, financial services, technology and software sectors; and also for shareholders, officers and directors when disputes arise concerning ownership and management.  Mike has also been counsel on several class actions.

Injunctions are an area of particular interest for Mike.  Injunctions are often necessary to protect a client’s strategic position, its control over assets or property, or to protect intellectual property such as confidential information and trade secrets against theft and misuse by competitors and former employees.  Along with conventional pre-trial injunctions, Mike also has considerable experience with asset freeze (“Mareva”) injunctions, civil search and seizure (“Anton Piller”) orders, sealing orders, and publication bans.

Mike has also represented local governments (municipalities) and publicly regulated utilities, in litigation matters before both the B.C. Courts and provincial administrative tribunals.  In the early years of his career, Mike acted as ad hoc Crown Counsel for the B.C Ministry of the Attorney General, where he conducted numerous criminal prosecutions.

In his media practice, Mike gives pre-publication advice to numerous newspapers, regarding both their print and online publishing businesses.  Mike also appears in court for major print media outlets, to oppose applications for publication bans on high-profile criminal cases, including most recently the “Surrey Six” prosecutions.
